Ave maris stella by Thomas Stoltzer — Lyrics
About Ave maris stella
Thomas Stoltzer sets the familiar Marian antiphon Ave maris stella for ATBB voices. The music opens with a dignified, stately unfolding of the opening phrases, soon developing into imitative passages where the lower voices provide a rich foundation. The composer captures the devotional and pleading nature of the Latin text, which addresses Mary as the star of the sea, mother of God, and gate of heaven. It asks for her intercession, to undo Eve's curse and grant peace, light, and purity. Stoltzer's setting is a superb example of Renaissance motet writing, offering a well-crafted, sonorous texture that suits the sacred Latin words perfectly.
