About Ave maris stella
Francisco Alcantar set this popular Marian antiphon for SSA voices. The Latin text, traditionally sung at Vespers on feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, addresses Mary as 'Star of the sea', 'Mother of God', 'ever Virgin', and 'Heaven's gate'. It asks her to protect the faithful, offering light to the blind and dispelling evil. The antiphon pleads for her maternal intercession, asking that those born of her may accept our prayers. It concludes by requesting purity and chastity, and a safe journey through life, that we may rejoice in seeing Jesus. The text is a profound expression of devotion to Mary as mediatrix.
