About Ave maris stella
This ancient Latin hymn, Ave maris stella, is a fervent invocation to Mary, the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin. Its text opens with a greeting to Mary as the Star of the Sea, the nurturing Mother of God, and the ever-virgin, the gate of heaven. It pleads for peace, for the undoing of sin, and for guidance, asking Mary to intercede as a mother, that we may see Jesus. The hymn acknowledges her unique purity and meekness, praying for us to be freed from guilt and made chaste. It concludes with a doxology to the Trinity. This setting is for unison voices, a powerful and direct presentation of the sacred text.
