About Ave Maris Stella
Francesco Cavalli's Ave Maris Stella is a sacred motet for ATB voices, sung in Latin. The text, a Marian antiphon, addresses Mary as the star of the sea, mother of God, and ever-virgin gate of heaven. It implores her intercession, asking her to transform Eve's name (associated with sin) to our own, to loosen the chains of the guilty, bring light to the blind, and to drive away evils while granting all good things. The piece moves from supplication to praise, asking Mary to show herself a mother and to receive our prayers, that through her, we may always rejoice in seeing Jesus, who was born for us. It concludes with praise to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
