About Ave maris stella
J. G. Stalnaker’s Ave maris stella unfolds with rich SATB harmonies, a sacred anthem that draws its text from the traditional Marian antiphon. The Latin lyrics, also provided in an English translation, are a fervent plea to Mary, the Star of the Sea. The choir is invited to embody the text's devotion, moving from an invocation of her role as Mother of God and Everlasting Virgin to prayers for peace, guidance, and protection. The composer captures the reverent spirit of the words, offering a setting that is both musically engaging and spiritually resonant, culminating in a prayer for eternal joy with Christ. It is a powerful devotional piece for a choir.
