About Ave maris stella
This setting of the Marian antiphon Ave maris stella is for TTBB or TTBarB voices, sung in Latin. The text, a prayer to Mary as the 'star of the sea', Mother of God, and eternal Virgin, asks for her intercession. It calls on her to grant peace, undo the chains of the guilty, bring light to the blind, and ward off evil. The composer, Josep Navarro i Solves, sets these petitions with a clear devotion to Mary as a guide and protector, asking her to make the faithful pure, gentle, and chaste. The motet concludes with a doxology praising God the Father, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.
