About Ave Regina Caelorum
Francesco Cavalli was a significant figure in the Venetian Baroque, known for his operas and sacred music. This Ave Regina Caelorum setting showcases his skill in writing for a smaller ensemble. The Latin text, a traditional Marian antiphon, addresses Mary as Queen of Heaven and Lady of Angels, extolling her virtues and role as the root and gate from which Christ's light shone upon the world. The composer sets this veneration for two low voices (tenor and bass) with a directness and clarity that underlines the text's devotional message. It is a fine example of motet writing from the 17th century, suitable for liturgical occasions or services focused on the Virgin Mary.
