About Ave Regina caelorum
A votive antiphon, this Latin setting of Ave Regina caelorum by Nicolas Gombert is suitable for Marian occasions, particularly during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Its SATTB voicing allows for rich harmonic textures, characteristic of Renaissance sacred polyphony. The text addresses Mary as Queen of Heaven and Lady of Angels, hailing her as the root and gate from which Christ the world's light was born. It continues with a joyous acclamation of the glorious Virgin, surpassing all in beauty, and concludes with a plea for her to intercede with Christ on behalf of the singers.
