About Ave maris stella
The familiar Latin hymn Ave maris stella is here set for SATB choir by Jacquet de Mantua. The text is a Marian antiphon, addressing Mary as 'Star of the sea' and 'Mother of God', praying for her intercession. It asks her to change Eve's name, symbolising the reversal of original sin, to protect the faithful, guide the blind, and drive away evil. The hymn beseeches her to show herself a mother, and that through her, prayers may be accepted by her son. It also asks for purity, a safe journey through life, and eternal joy in seeing Jesus. The chant concludes with praise to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
