Ekene Maria

"Ekene Maria" is a vibrant and deeply rhythmic Marian hymn composed by Rev. Fr. Dominic Igwe. Setting the traditional "Hail Mary" prayer to a lively Igbo choral arrangement, the piece opens with a gentle solo and tutti invocation before bursting into a joyful, syncopated refrain. It is a favorite for Catholic choirs across Nigeria, especially during May and October devotions, Marian feast days, or as an Offertory anthem when honoring the Blessed Mother.

The verses naturally expand on the scriptural greetings to Mary. The first verse recalls her powerful intercession, asking her to pray for us "dị ka na Kana na Galilee" (just as at Cana in Galilee). The second verse shifts into an energetic, rhythmic chant praising Jesus, the blessed fruit of her womb ("bụ Nwa afọ gị Jesu"), building up to a spirited, percussive climax that brings the whole choir loft to life.
