Ekene Maria

"Ekene Maria" is a vibrant and deeply rhythmic setting of the Hail Mary in Igbo, composed by Rev. Fr. Dominic Igwe. Right from the opening solo and the choir's answering "Ave," the piece establishes a joyful, celebratory mood. It is a wonderful choice for Marian feast days, the month of October, or as a lively recessional hymn when the congregation wants to lift their voices in honor of the Blessed Mother.

The verses beautifully expand on the traditional prayer. The first verse asks Mary to intercede for us just as she did at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, bringing a very relatable, scriptural plea into the song. The second verse shifts focus to the fruit of her womb, Jesus. The choir breaks into an energetic, repeating chant of "Ọ ga-achị, chị, chị..."—a powerful declaration that Christ, the Prince of Peace and God Himself, will rule over all nations forever.

Singing this piece is always a delight for a choir because of how it builds. The repetitive "Aves" in the refrain create a cascading effect across the voices, while the rhythmic drive of the second verse gives the singers a chance to truly proclaim Christ's kingship. It perfectly captures the Catholic devotion of honoring the Mother to glorify the Son.
