Ekene Maria

There is a special warmth that fills the church when the choir begins a Marian hymn that blends the universal Latin greeting with the deep reverence of the Igbo language. "Ekene Maria," composed by Rev. Fr. Dominic Igwe, does exactly this. It opens with a gentle, floating solo of "Ave Maria" before the full choir joins in, echoing the angel's greeting. The refrain then bursts into a joyful, rhythmic Igbo praise, declaring Mary full of grace and offering her our deepest respect as "Nwaanyị ọma, ezigbo Nne" (Good woman, true Mother).

In the verses, the song reflects on Mary's unique place among women and her powerful intercession. The choir sings of her blessedness and asks her to plead for us, just as she did at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee. The music carries a steady, comforting rhythm that feels right at home during May and October devotions, or as a beautiful meditation after Communion on Marian feast days. It is a song that invites the congregation to lean on the Mother of God, trusting in her care and her closeness to Christ.
