Kyrie by Jude Nwankwo — Lyrics
About Kyrie
This setting of the Penitential Rite brings a gentle, pleading reverence to the beginning of Mass. Composed by Jude Nwankwo as part of his Mass in Eb, the piece uses the English translation of the traditional Kyrie eleison, guiding the congregation into a space of reflection and repentance.
Written for a four-part choir, the arrangement flows at a slow, deliberate tempo that allows the singers to blend their voices in a unified cry for God's grace. The soprano line carries a soaring, expressive melody, while the lower voices provide a warm, grounding harmony. As the phrases build and resolve through "Lord have mercy" and "Christ have mercy," the music creates a deeply moving atmosphere in the choir loft and the pews alike.
It is an excellent choice for Sundays and solemnities where a reflective, English-language Kyrie is needed. The careful voice leading and expressive dynamics give choir directors plenty of room to shape the phrases, helping the whole church prepare their hearts for the Liturgy of the Word.
