Kyrie

Jude Nnam’s "Kyrie" is a straightforward, deeply prayerful setting of the Mass's Penitential Rite. Dated 1997 on the manuscript, it captures the solemnity of the introductory rites while maintaining a steady, approachable rhythm that choirs can easily pick up. The melody rises with a gentle plea, asking for God's mercy before the congregation enters fully into the Liturgy of the Word.

When teaching this piece in the choir loft, you will notice how the harmony parts echo and support the main melody. The lower voices provide a steady foundation, while the soprano line floats above, especially in the overlapping, repeated phrases of the final "eleison." The structure is simple and intuitive, making it an excellent piece for choirs of all sizes to learn quickly without needing weeks of rehearsal.

This setting is a wonderful choice for Sundays in Ordinary Time or during the more reflective weeks of the Lenten season. It does exactly what a good service piece should do: it helps the congregation center their hearts and voices in a unified, sung call for compassion, preparing everyone for the rest of the Mass.
