KYRIE (LORD HAVE MERCY) by Jerry-lasong Okoro — Lyrics
About KYRIE (LORD HAVE MERCY)
When we prepare for the Penitential Rite, we look for music that carries both reverence and a deep sense of petition. Jerry-lasong Okoro’s arrangement of "Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy)" does exactly this, offering a steady, heartfelt plea for God’s grace. Instead of just repeating the traditional phrases, the verses expand into beautiful titles for the Lord, calling on the "God Almighty, just and faithful" and the "Light of truth and Light of Justice."
What makes this setting particularly moving for a choir is the final section. After singing the verses together, the arrangement shifts: the main body of the choir unites in a strong unison melody, while the sopranos break away into a soaring descant. This rising line lifts the final "Lord have mercy" above the congregation, creating a moment of earnest, heavenward prayer before the Mass continues. It is a wonderful piece for Sundays when the choir wants to lead the entrance rites with both solemnity and vocal warmth.
