KYRIE (Lord Have Mercy)

When we prepare our hearts at the beginning of Mass, the Penitential Rite calls for a deep sense of humility and reflection. Kingsley Okoli’s setting of the "Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy)" captures this beautifully by weaving a line from the Confiteor directly into the traditional pleas. As the choir sings "Through my fault," it brings a very personal, grounded feeling to the universal cry for God's compassion, reminding the congregation of the individual responsibility we bring to the altar.

Musically, the piece is marked *Grave*, setting a slow, reverent pace that allows the harmonies to breathe and settle. The soprano line carries the main melody, moving smoothly from the ancient "Kyrie Eleison" into the English text, while the lower voices provide a steady, supportive foundation. The bass line even introduces a gentle simultaneous variation, singing "we are your children," which adds a comforting layer of trust in God's mercy beneath the main melody.

This arrangement is a wonderful choice for the Lenten season or any Sunday where the liturgy calls for a more contemplative, solemn opening.
