Anton Bruckner's motet In monte Oliveti is a profound setting of the Latin text from the Gospels, recounting Christ's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic exploration, characteristic of Bruckner's sacred choral writing. The text directly conveys the human struggle with suffering and the ultimate submission to divine will: 'Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me... the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Thy will be done.' This is followed by the call to watch and pray, 'Vigilate, et orate, ut non intretis in tentationem.'
