About In monte oliveti
The composer's setting of a Latin text from the Gospels paints a vivid scene of Christ's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. The words express his human vulnerability and his submission to God's will: "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." This is followed by Jesus' plea to his disciples to "Watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation." Ingegneri's SATB setting captures the solemnity and pathos of this moment, making it a powerful sacred motet for choral performance.
