About Ave sanctissima Maria
Sung during Marian services or feasts, this setting of the Ave Maria text for ATTB voices by Paolo Animuccia is a fine example of a sacred motet. The Latin text addresses Mary as the holy mother of God, queen of heaven, and the pure, singular virgin who conceived Jesus without sin. The motet then moves to pleas for intercession, asking Mary to pray for us to her beloved son and to deliver us from all evils. Animuccia's composition would have been performed in liturgical settings, likely during the Renaissance period, adding a devotional dimension to the sacred service.
