About Ave sanctissima Maria
This devotional motet in Latin honours the Virgin Mary with a series of exalted titles, including Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, and Mistress of the World. The text praises her purity and virginity, and her unique role in conceiving Jesus without sin and giving birth to the Creator and Saviour. The composer Ivo de Vento, a significant figure in late 16th-century South German polyphony, sets this text for SATB choir. The music would have been conceived for use within the Catholic liturgy, but its profound expression of Marian devotion makes it suitable for any setting where sacred choral music is appreciated.
