About Ave sanctissima Maria
Nicolas Gombert, a leading composer of the Franco-Flemish school, wrote this sacred motet for SATB voices. The Latin text is a Marian antiphon, invoking the Virgin Mary with titles such as Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, and Mistress of the World. It praises her purity and her role in the conception and birth of Jesus, the Creator and Savior. The motet implores her intercession, asking her to deliver us from all evils and to pray for our sins. Gombert's setting would have been heard within the context of Catholic liturgy or devotion, showcasing the rich polyphonic tradition of the Renaissance.
