About Agnus Dei
This Agnus Dei is a solemn setting of the traditional Latin text, sung by SATB choir. As part of the Mass Ordinary, its liturgical purpose is to invoke the Lamb of God, imploring mercy and peace. The anonymous composer’s work offers a devotional focus, its texture shaped by the sacred musical tradition of its time. The text, sung three times in succession, gradually shifts from supplication for mercy to a plea for lasting peace, a common and powerful rhetorical device within the Agnus Dei.
