KYRIE

When we prepare for the Penitential Rite, we look for music that helps the congregation truly center themselves and ask for God's mercy. Funkeye Tubotu’s "Kyrie" does exactly that, offering a reverent setting of the "Lord, have mercy" in the Izon language. From the very first notes, the gentle, flowing melody invites a spirit of deep reflection.

The structure follows the traditional threefold petition, moving from "Nana'wei" (Lord) to "Kristi" (Christ) and back again. The Soprano line carries a tender, pleading melody with the words "Wo dineni" (have mercy), while the lower voices provide a warm, steady foundation that feels like a collective prayer rising from the choir loft. The subtle shifts in the harmony during the "Kristi" section bring a quiet intensity to the plea before returning to the familiar opening theme.

Singing this piece during Mass brings a profound sense of peace to the liturgy. It is not overly complex, which allows the choir to focus entirely on the meaning of the words and the blend of their voices.
