Jesu nostra redemptio

Orlando di Lasso's sacred motet Jesu nostra redemptio sets a Latin text of profound theological reflection. The words express the central tenets of Christian belief: Jesus as redeemer, the embodiment of divine love, the creator of all, and humanity's saviour at the end of time. The text contemplates the immense mercy that led Christ to suffer a cruel death, thereby rescuing humanity from eternal damnation. It describes his triumphant descent into hell to liberate captives, his ascension to God's right hand, and implores his continued intercession to overcome evil and grant salvation. This six-part setting for SAATBB voices offers a rich, polyphonic texture perfectly suited to the solemn and exultant nature of the text.
