IYAYI

"Iyayi" is a graceful, flowing setting of the Nicene Creed in the Edo (Bini) language. Composed by Eroms John O., this piece allows the choir and congregation to profess their Catholic faith in their native tongue. The music is set in a gentle 12/8 time, giving the extensive text of the Creed a natural, rhythmic chant that feels both solemn and deeply personal.

In the liturgy, the Creed is sung right after the homily on Sundays and major feast days. This arrangement anchors the long profession of faith with the recurring, steadfast phrase "I ya yi" (I believe). From acknowledging God the Father ("Osanobua") to the final, resounding "I sẹẹ o" (Amen), the melody guides the singers through the mysteries of the incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection.
