Alleluja. In exitu Israël de Aegypto, domus Jacob de populo barbaro,
facta est Judaea sanctificatio ejus; Israël potestas ejus.
Mare vidit, et fugit; Jordanis conversus est retrorsum.
Montes exsultaverunt ut arietes, et colles sicut agni ovium.
Quid est tibi, mare, quod fugisti? et tu, Jordanis, quia conversus es retrorsum?

About In exitu
Juan Navarro Hispalensis, a composer of the Spanish Renaissance, wrote this setting of Psalm 113 (114) for SATB voices in Latin. Part of the Vesper Psalms, In exitu Israel tells the story of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt, a narrative of liberation and divine intervention. The text vividly describes the parting of the Red Sea and the Jordan River, and the joyful reaction of the mountains and hills. Navarro's music captures the drama and exultation of this foundational event in biblical history, culminating in a prayer for God's glory to be known among the nations. The composition is a powerful example of sacred polyphony from its era.
