Alleluja. In exitu Israël de Aegypto, domus Jacob de populo barbaro,
facta est Judaea sanctificatio ejus; Israël potestas ejus.
Mare vidit, et fugit; Jordanis conversus est retrorsum.
Montes exsultaverunt ut arietes, et colles sicut agni ovium.

About In exitu
Agostino Steffani’s setting of In exitu Israël is a powerful, double-choir work for SATB.SATB voices. The text, a psalm paraphrasing the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt, is sung in Latin. The composer’s skill is evident in the way he depicts the dramatic events of the psalm: the parting of the Red Sea, the Jordan flowing backwards, and mountains leaping. He contrasts these grand biblical scenes with a deeply personal plea for God’s glory to be proclaimed. The double choir allows for a rich, antiphonal texture, creating a sense of space and grandeur, whilst moments of intense homophony underscore the theological weight of the text. This is a deeply moving anthem, ideal for a choir seeking a substantial and sonically impressive liturgical work.
