About Dulces exuviae
Marbrianus de Orto's Dulces exuviae is a secular ode for SATB choir, sung in Latin. The text, taken from Virgil's Aeneid, offers a lament from Dido, Queen of Carthage, as she contemplates her impending death. She reflects on her life, her achievements in building a great city, and the vengeance she enacted, but regrets her encounter with the Trojan fleet. The music captures the pathos of her final words, bidding farewell to her possessions and embracing death with a sense of tragic finality as she resolves to die unavenged, but die she will. This setting emphasizes the dramatic intensity of the queen's farewell.
