About Dic nobis Angele Dei
Giovanni Francesco Anerio's motet Dic nobis Angele Dei is a setting of a Latin text that celebrates the Nativity. The first part of the text, sung by the SSATB choir, poses a question to an angel about God's mighty works, before announcing the birth of the Saviour. The music then calls for praise to God with 'alleluia' refrains. The second part draws on the familiar words of the 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' and the 'Incarnatus est' from the Mass, proclaiming that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. The composer's setting uses the full SSATB forces to convey the joy of this sacred message.
