Crucifixus

Claudio Monteverdi's Crucifixus is a setting of the Nicene Creed text which forms part of the Mass. This arresting motet for ATTB voices sets the central mystery of the Christian faith: the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The text speaks of his suffering under Pontius Pilate, his burial, and his resurrection on the third day. It continues with his ascension into heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father, and his promised glorious return to judge the living and the dead, heralding a kingdom without end. Monteverdi’s powerful setting vividly portrays the drama and theological weight of these profound statements.
