About Christus factus est
Johann Michael Haydn, brother of the more famous Joseph, was a prolific composer of sacred and secular music. This motet, Christus factus est, is a setting of a passage from Philippians 2:8-9, traditionally used as an antiphon or responsory in the Catholic liturgy. The Latin text speaks of Christ's obedience unto death and God's subsequent exaltation of him, bestowing upon him a name above all names. Haydn’s setting for SATB choir captures the solemnity and triumph of the text, with a direct and powerful musical expression. The homophonic texture emphasizes the clear declamation of the sacred words, making it an effective and moving liturgical or concert work.
