About Christus factus est
This arresting motet by Giovanni Matteo Asola, Christus factus est, is set for ATB voices. It draws on the potent Latin text from Philippians 2:8-9, which describes Christ's obedience unto death, even death on the cross. The music then reflects the exaltation that follows, as Asola sets the words "Propter quod et Deus exaltavit illum et dedit illi nomen, quod est super omne nomen" (Therefore God exalted him and gave him the name that is above all names). This setting would be particularly fitting for services during Holy Week, or any occasion where the themes of sacrifice and divine elevation are contemplated.
