Beatus homo by Orlando di Lasso — Lyrics
About Beatus homo
Orlando di Lasso’s Beatus homo sets words from the Book of Proverbs, a prayer for wisdom and prudence. The Latin text praises the acquisition of wisdom above all earthly riches, comparing it to the finest gold. Lasso’s setting, for six voices in three distinct choirs (SA, AT, TB), creates a rich, resonant soundworld. Each choir often takes turns presenting musical ideas, or they combine in homophonic passages of great clarity and weight, giving emphasis to the sacred text. The interplay between the three choirs is masterfully handled, building to moments of powerful declaration. This motet is a profound reflection on the value of divine understanding, rendered with Lasso’s characteristic mastery of polyphony and expressive harmony.
