About Ave Regina
Andrea Gabrieli’s Ave Regina is a substantial motet exploring the traditional Marian antiphon. The composer crafts a rich sonic world for this eight-part choir, alternating between SATB and ATBB groupings to create dialogues and contrasts. The texture shifts between homophony and more imitative passages, highlighting the devotional text. The Latin lyrics address Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, the root and gate from which light was born into the world, and a glorious, beautiful Virgin to be prayed to Christ. Gabrieli’s setting moves with a stately grandeur, its elaborate vocal architecture perfectly suited to the profound and hopeful message of the text.
