About Ave regina
Jacquet of Mantua, a composer of the Franco-Flemish school, wrote this setting of the Marian votive antiphon Ave Regina. Sung in Latin, it is set for a rich SATTB choir. The text is a prayer to Mary, Queen of Heaven, and Lady of the Angels, hailing her as the root and gate from which the world's light sprang. It continues with a joyful acclamation of her glorious beauty, before asking her to intercede with Christ on our behalf. The polyphony likely reflects the devotional and liturgical context of its time, offering a powerful musical expression of Marian devotion.
