About Ave Maria
Sung during Marian services or at times of devotion, this Ave Maria by Johannes Brassart is a motet for four voices (AATT). The Latin text opens with a humble plea, with the singer acknowledging their sinfulness and sighing towards Mary, full of grace. The prayer then expands, invoking Mary's role as intercessor for her sinful children, asking her to plead with her son Jesus to cleanse them, free them from punishment, and grant them a place in heaven with the blessed. The motet concludes by extolling Mary with a series of titles, including Lady of the Apostles and Queen of Angels, before affirming her as the mother of God.
