AVE MARIA

Emma Orji’s "AVE MARIA" offers a bright, flowing setting of the Hail Mary that beautifully bridges the universal and the local. Marked Allegretto, the piece moves with a gentle but joyful momentum, stepping away from the somber tones often associated with Marian prayers. It opens with the traditional Latin greeting before seamlessly transitioning into the familiar Igbo translation of the prayer, "Ị dị ngọzi n'etiti ụmụnwanyị niile" (Blessed are you among all women).

For Nigerian Catholic choirs, this is the kind of piece that naturally finds its home during the Marian months of May and October, or on feast days dedicated to Our Lady. The vocal parts are tightly woven, allowing the text to shine clearly without getting lost in overly complex counterpoint.

What makes this arrangement particularly moving is its concluding plea. After praising the fruit of her womb, Jesus Christ, the choir asks for her intercession with the words "rịọtara anyị arịrịọ, mee bụ njọ mma"—a poetic request for her to pray for us and help make our wrongs right. It is a warm, comforting song of devotion that leaves the congregation with a sense of hope and maternal care.
