About Alma Redemptoris Mater
This setting of the Marian votive antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater by Orlando di Lasso is scored for double choir (SATB.SATB). The text, in Latin, is a prayer to Mary as the 'Soul of the Redeemer', the 'ever-open gate of heaven' and 'star of the sea', asking for succour for a people struggling to rise from sin. It praises her role in giving birth to her holy creator, the nature of which astonished creation, and recalls the Annunciation. It is suitable for occasions when a choir might sing Marian music, perhaps during Advent or for a votive office.
