About Alma Redemptoris Mater
Peter Griesbacher's setting of the Marian antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater is written for SATB choir in Latin. The text, a prayer to the Mother of the Redeemer, calls upon her as the gateway to heaven and star of the sea to aid those who strive to rise from falling. It praises her for giving birth to her holy creator, a wonder of nature, and recounts how she received the Ave Maria from Gabriel, remaining both before and after her unique motherhood. The motet sets this profound text with appropriate reverence.
