Alma redemptoris mater

Giovanni Animuccia was a key figure in Roman polyphony during the 16th century, working closely with Philip Neri and contributing significantly to the musical life of the Oratory. His motet settings of Marian antiphons were widely appreciated. This setting of Alma redemptoris mater, a well-known Latin text, is for a substantial choir of six parts: Soprano, Tenor, Tenor, Bass, Bass. The text addresses the Virgin Mary as the mother of the Redeemer, the gateway to heaven, and the star of the sea, imploring her to aid her people. It recounts her miraculous conception of Christ and her reception of the angelic greeting, concluding with a plea for mercy for sinners. Animuccia's sensitive handling of the words captures the devotion and supplication inherent in this traditional Marian antiphon.
