About Alma redemptoris mater
This setting of the Marian antiphon Alma redemptoris mater by Heinrich Isaac would be suitable for services during Advent and Christmastide, or for Marian feasts. Composed in Latin for four voices (ATTB), it embodies the profound reverence characteristic of sacred Renaissance motets. Isaac’s music skilfully portrays the text’s plea for the Mother of the Redeemer, the heavenly gate and star of the sea, to aid her fallen people. The composer captures the wonder of her conceiving God, her perpetual virginity, and her receiving the angelic greeting, beseeching her mercy for sinners.
