About Alma Redemptoris Mater
Peter Philips was a leading English composer of sacred and secular music, active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This setting of Alma Redemptoris Mater, a famous Marian votive antiphon, is written for SSATB voices in Latin. The text addresses the Virgin Mary as the 'Soul of the Mother of the Redeemer,' the 'heavenly door,' and 'star of the sea,' imploring her to help mankind. It recalls her miraculous conception of Christ and her reception of the Angel Gabriel's greeting, beseeching her to have mercy on sinners. Philips's motet is a fine example of the rich contrapuntal style used in sacred music of this period, suitable for services or concerts.
