About Alma Redemptoris
"Alma Redemptoris" is a classic Latin antiphon dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, calling upon her as the loving mother of the Savior, the open gate of heaven, and the star of the sea. For Catholic choirs, this piece is a staple of Marian devotion, traditionally sung at the close of Mass or during evening prayers from the season of Advent through to the feast of the Presentation.
The text beautifully asks Mary to assist her fallen people who strive to rise again. Singing these ancient Latin words connects the local choir loft to the universal Church. This particular handwritten solfa arrangement allows singers who read tonic sol-fa to easily learn and master the flowing melody, bringing a moment of deep reverence and peace to the congregation.
