AGNUS DEI by VALENTINE PATRICK — Lyrics
About AGNUS DEI
When the bread is broken at the altar, the choir leads the congregation in this ancient, quiet plea. The "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God) is one of the most profound moments of the Mass, shifting our focus directly to Christ's sacrifice just before we approach the altar for Communion.
Valentine Patrick’s arrangement captures the solemnity and reverence required for this part of the liturgy. The voices move together in a steady, measured pace—marked *Maestoso* on the score—giving the Latin text a sense of gentle majesty. As the choir sings "qui tollis peccata mundi" (who takes away the sins of the world), the harmony swells slightly, carrying the weight of the words before resolving into the humble petition of "miserere nobis" (have mercy on us).
In the final repetition, the prayer changes from a cry for mercy to a request for lasting peace: "dona nobis pacem." For a choir, singing this piece is an exercise in restraint and blend, ensuring the music serves the sacred action taking place in the sanctuary. It prepares both the singers in the loft and the people in the pews to receive the Eucharist with a calm and open spirit.
