AFUFU MMUO

"Afụfụ Mmụọ" (Story of the Cross) is a solemn and deeply moving Igbo choral piece that reflects on the passion and agony of Jesus Christ. Composed by Sam Ojukwu, the song draws the choir and congregation into the sorrowful narrative of Holy Week, asking a piercing question: after all the good works, miracles, and love Christ showed the world, how did humanity repay Him? With a shameful death on the cross.

The arrangement uses distinct vocal sections to tell the story dramatically. A baritone solo takes on the voice of a narrator, recounting Christ's miracles—making the lame leap, giving sight to the blind, and raising the dead—while contrasting this with the crowd's sudden turn from shouting "Hosanna" to demanding His crucifixion. The choir responds with a heavy, mournful refrain, emphasizing the weight of the cross and the injustice of His trial before Pilate.
