Stay with me

"Stay with me" is one of those deeply moving chants that instantly shifts the atmosphere of a church. Written by Jacques Berthier for the Taizé community, it draws us right into the garden of Gethsemane. The words are simple—Christ’s plea to his disciples to remain awake and keep watch with him during his agony. Because the main chorale is an ostinato, the choir and congregation sing that central phrase over and over, allowing the harmony to wash over the room and the prayer to sink deep into the heart.

As the choir sustains the gentle, repeating refrain, a soloist floats the verses over the top. These verses carry the weight of the narrative, moving from the warning to "watch and pray not to give way to temptation" to the profound surrender of "Father, if this cannot pass me by without my drinking it, your will be done."

We usually bring this piece out during Lent, and it is especially powerful on Holy Thursday during the transfer of the Eucharist to the Altar of Repose. It is a perfect choice for night vigils, adoration, or any moment of quiet, reflective prayer. The beauty of this arrangement lies in its simplicity; it doesn't need to be rushed or forced, just sung with a quiet, steady devotion.
