About PENTECOST SEQUENCE (in english)
Justin Anyanwu’s setting of the "Pentecost Sequence" offers a prayerful and grounded approach to one of the Church’s most important liturgical texts. Sung on Pentecost Sunday just before the Gospel Acclamation, the sequence is a direct invocation of the Holy Spirit. This arrangement opens with a gentle, harmonised Latin refrain—"Veni Sancte Spiritus"—setting a reverent tone before moving into the English verses.
The verses themselves are laid out for a male solo or unison singing, carrying a translation of the Golden Sequence. The words plead for the Spirit’s presence as a comforter, a cooling breeze in the heat of labour, and a healing force for the wounded soul. By keeping the verses rhythmically steady and melodically straightforward, the arrangement ensures the profound poetry of the text remains the central focus.
For a choir, this piece serves its liturgical function perfectly. The contrast between the full four-part Latin invocation and the narrative English verses gives the singing a natural ebb and flow. It draws the congregation into a moment of deep reflection, preparing them to hear the Gospel and celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit.
