Ebube Chukwu by David Irobonosen — Lyrics
About Ebube Chukwu
When the time comes for the Offertory procession, a choir needs a song that naturally lifts the congregation to their feet. "Ebube Chukwu" does exactly that. Arranged with a driving, rhythmic energy by David Irobonosen, this piece is an exuberant celebration of God’s glory and goodness. It opens with a reverent tenor solo calling upon the Creator ("Onye Okike"), before the full choir bursts in with a vibrant, percussive response of "Chukwuoma" (Good God).
What makes this arrangement especially moving is how it gathers different voices of praise into one unified offering. Midway through the song, the tenor solo returns to declare God’s majesty across various Nigerian languages. The lyrics acknowledge Him as "Eze ndi eze" in Igbo, "Oba awon'ba" in Yoruba, "Sariki na sarki" in Hausa, and "Ojie no s'ojie" in Esan. It is a powerful moment that reflects the universal nature of worship, reminding everyone in the pews that God’s greatness spans all cultures.
For the choir, the piece offers wonderful dynamic contrasts. The smooth, chanting solo lines float above the rhythmic, layered harmonies of the chorus, eventually building into the heavy, joyful chants of "Odogwu! Odogwu!" (Mighty Warrior). It is a perfect choice for a festive Sunday Mass, carrying the gifts to the altar with a spirit of profound thanksgiving and undeniable joy.
