About Nyenu Messiah

"Nyenu Messiah" is a majestic and sweeping Igbo choral setting of Psalm 29, composed by Sam Ojukwu for the Owerri Diocesan Synod in May 1988. The piece opens with a powerful call to worship, urging the children of God (ụmụ Chineke) to ascribe glory and strength to the Messiah and to bow down in the beauty of holiness.

As the anthem unfolds through its verses, the choir paints a vivid, dramatic picture of the voice of the Lord. The music captures the sheer force of this voice thundering over the waters, shattering the cedars of Lebanon, flashing forth flames of fire, and shaking the wilderness of Kedesh. The dynamic shifts in the score mirror the text perfectly, moving from the forceful breaking of the trees to the awe-inspiring moment when the forests are stripped bare.

Everything builds toward a glorious climax in the final verses. After the storm of God's power is displayed, the piece settles into a triumphant declaration of His eternal kingship. The choir sings of the Messiah sitting enthroned over the flood, blessing His people with strength and peace, before ending on the resounding, unified cry of the heavenly temple: "Ebube!" (Glory!). It is a thrilling anthem that brings the raw power and majesty of the psalms right into the choir loft.
