Nwaturu Nke Chukwu

"Nwaturu Nke Chukwu" is a bilingual setting of the Agnus Dei, composed by Rev. Fr. Okwy Tony Umeh. Written to be sung during the breaking of the bread, this piece allows the choir and congregation to pray for God's mercy and peace in both English and Igbo. The melody is straightforward and rhythmic, carrying a gentle, quasi-allegro tempo that keeps the communion procession moving while maintaining a spirit of reverence.

In many Nigerian parishes, blending English and indigenous languages within the Mass parts is a natural way to unite the congregation in worship. The choir typically leads the English verses first—"O Lamb of God... have mercy on us"—before transitioning seamlessly into the Igbo translation, "O Nwaturu nke Chukwu." The repeated pleas for mercy ("mee ebere biko") and peace ("nye anyi udo") build a sense of earnest devotion as the faithful prepare to receive the Eucharist.
